Devon Park was designed and developed by the renowned architect, Neville Price; there are other examples of his work in Auckland… West Plaza in Customs Street is one (in 2005 it was awarded an Enduring Award by the New Zealand Institute of Architects) and other examples of his work are the Manukau City Council building, Ceramic House and 82 Symonds Street. Neville Price moved to San Francisco in 1980 and established a successful practice in that very competitive market.

In 2006 Metro magazine placed Neville Price on its list of the top 25 Aucklanders to have shaped the city. Devon Park is a building in the ‘20th Century International Modern’ idiom. Its concrete slab and column construction separates the structure from the facade, enabling the use of large glazed areas and exterior sheer walls which give it its great strength. It is a thoughtfully designed, functional residential building, rightfully regarded as a classic of its type. Construction started in 1966 and was completed in 1968.

As well as on-going maintenance to a high level, many aspects of the building have been improved and refurbished – A new fire protection system; the lifts modernised; garages refurbished; a centralised gas hot water system installed and a solar panel supplementary hot water system fitted (the largest domestic installation in New Zealand) and the swimming pool has been upgraded. Recent work has included the removal of canopies between the garages and the main building to visually open up the entry area and the progressive refurbishment of the lift lobbies in the tower.

While Devon park is now 45 years old, its timeless style, enviable quality and the manner in which it is managed will ensure it will continue to be enjoyed by those lucky enough to live here for decades to come.
